    • I've read a score of books on America's First Ladies; however, none from this most unique and interesting vantage point. Half way through the introduction, I knew I wanted to take this journey, crisscrossing the United States, with Andy as my tour guide. With Mr. Och's marvelous story telling ability and extensive research, he transports the reader in time, making history come alive to meet these remarkable women—the person, not her celebrity or fame. A must read for male, female, young and old alike. Be it a professional, novice or skeptic, all will enjoy this delicious adventure. I devoured each chapter and am excitedly awaiting Volume II.

    • From spouses who bankrolled their husbands' entire political careers to those who closely guarded potentially damaging family secrets, first ladies have consistently laid the groundwork for the most consequential presidencies in American history. Andy Och makes the case for the personal influence of first ladies in a fun and entertaining manner.

      - Lauren A. Wright, PhD, Author of "On Behalf of the President: Presidential Spouses and White House Communications Strategy Today."

    • No doubt about it! Andy Och is unquestionably the First Lady's Man! Armed with little more than a camera, an open mind toward women and history, and a super imagination which combines all three elements, he has created an epic part-travelogue, part-history, and totally delightful foray into the lives, the times and the places where an amazing assortment of women who became First Lady can take their place on a stage all by themselves!

    • Andy Och has given us a fascinating book that is part travelogue, part collective biography. The result of his time spent on the road is a unique history of the First Ladies that will undoubtedly appeal to the broadest audience.

    • "Andy Och's exploration of the lives of America's First Ladies is as rich and varied as the lives of those women themselves, and as unexpected. His adventurous, even picaresque, experience with the diverse people and places that enhance our appreciation of these extraordinary women, is both informative and engaging, giving us an important behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be on the front line of history in modern America."

    • From the very first page you know this is not going to be "just" another biographical overview of the First Ladies. In fact the very first page tugs you into the stories… the stories of what made the First Ladies "unusual for their time;" the stories of people, places and objects associated with these remarkable women; and the stories behind Och's transformation from documentarian to historian because of what he learned. Andrew Och's book is in part history text and travelogue, but refreshingly written from Och's insightful, and frequently humorous perspective. Although written in an easy storytelling manner, the book is rich with new historical detail about the First Ladies. Their lives in the White House are important, but Och also focuses on what came before and after proving their consequence as partners for their presidential husbands and icons for our nation. Thankfully this is only volume one, we will anticipate and look forward to many more stories as Andrew Och writes his way through the lives of our country's amazing First Ladies.

      • I learned so much about these interesting women and the times they lived through. I also learned about the process of history rescinding through the eyes of an "Everyman". This book is unusual for its time. Read it if you've ever wondered about the person our presidents' made their first big promise to.

      • I'm generally not a history buff, but this light hearted read allowed me to gain some insight into the lives of the first ladies while taking a real life adventure with the author. If more history books were written in this style, I imagine they'd reach a greater audience. I especially like the travel tips and personal nature of the book. What a unique way to tell a story.

      • I've read more than my fair share of books and articles about First Ladies, and I found lots to learn, think about and just plain enjoy from Unusual for Their Time. I almost always felt like I was there, at the place, where history happened. That sounds trite, sure, but it's more than that. Andy has a knack for storytelling, a way of sharing the humanity of his subjects, and the people he met along the way, that I really enjoy. The more I read, the more I wanted to read, and the more I wanted to visit these places myself. I'm looking forward to Volume II. (If you have a chance to hear Andy Och in person, don't miss out. I was part of an audience in Greensboro, NC. We loved hearing about Dolley Madison and her connections to so many Presidents and First Ladies. Yes, we laughed when Andy joked about a Dolley Madison drinking game!)

      • Unique and thoroughly enjoyable way to learn about these important women
      • By Caton June 15, 2016

      • I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Och present about his cross-country adventure to learn about the first ladies and the entire room, from middle school children to retirees, were riveted on his story telling. He very clearly worked tirelessly to gather unusual tidbits and facts about these women in order to share why each, in their own way, blazed new trails to be considered Unusual for Their Time. A very interesting read! And, where else will you learn that Abigail Fillmore created the first White House library, the roots of “throw the baby out with the bathwater,” and the name of the best crab and rib restaurant in Nashville all in one place?

      • Unusually Cool History for Our Time
      • By Blake F., Esq.on May 27, 2016
      • Format: Paperback
      • Unusual For Their Time is a readable and enjoyable book. Far more accessible than your average historical tome, it is equal parts history, travelogue, and a series of interesting and cool stories about some very remarkable women, all wrapped up into one volume. Mr. Och, the "First Ladies Man", makes no pretense of conventional literary/historical scholarship, yet his gonzo enthusiasm for his subject more than compensates for a lack of footnotes. Looking forward to Volume II and its coverage of the more modern day First Ladies.

      • As someone who studied history in college, I have read my fair share of history books over the years. Unusual For Their Time was a page turner and has a niche of its own. Part travelogue of the author's adventures and full of First Ladies’ history, this book was engaging and dynamic. The storytelling had me feeling as if I was along for the ride and on the journey to the various locations. It drew me in and left me looking forward to the second volume.
